It’s commonly used in Java. In C# you can use “is” or “as” instead.
if (object is String) will return true if the supplied object is a String.
(object as String) is just another way of casting object to a String.

Amazon.com (NSDQ: AMZN) is launching its new streaming online movie and video service tomorrow…the new service is called, surprise surprise, Amazon Video on Demand. Some details of the service were inadvertently pre-announced by CEO Jeff Bezos at the D conference in May. It will be available at Amazon.com/VOD when it launches…well, not yet fully. Turns out it is only launching in beta now, and will be accessible to a limited number of invited Amazon.com customers on Thursday before it opens more broadly to other users later this summer.

The service will be separate from its Unbox download service, though one would assume they would be merged down the line. The VOD service has about 40,000 movies and TV programs that users can stream right after they order…it looks like it will be a hybrid progressive download service: the first two minutes of all movies and TV shows will begin playing for users on Amazon.com immediately when they visit a title’s product page on store, the NYT story says. Also, it will let users store the video in a virtual locker online, and then they can watch from any PC or TV when that’s connected.

To promote the service beyond its site, Amazon has tied up with Sony (NYSE: SNE) Electronics to place this service on the Sony Bravia line of HD TVs. This means that the VOD service will be available on these TV sets, with the big hurdle being online-to-TV viewing is only available via Sony Bravia Internet Video link, a $300 tower-shaped device that plugs into the TV. Expect Amazon to make similar deals with other hardware companies along these lines.

Amazon’s Unbox video service, launched in 2006, hasn’t been a huge hit, mainly because of its interface and the need to download and install a special software. Also, the service works only with Windows PCs and it did a deal in 2007 to allows users to download to Tivo DVR.

The announcement comes days after Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) XBox announced Netflix’s (NSDQ: NFLX) online service integration, and Sony announced is own PS3 video service.

The phone may be quicker, but the wait sure is a drag. After New Zealand and Japan got there first, after Europeans queued up, one year after iPhone 1.0 hit… North Americans have finally got their hands on the 3G version of the device that, perhaps, Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) should have released in the first place.

But many who have walked away from Apple and AT&T (NYSE: T) stores with the new handset have found themselves unable to activate it on the network. Even those trying to activate inside the Apple Store weren’t spared what appears to be yet another system overload. In the UK, O2’s web-based activation system, which also was strained, required Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) Internet Explorer, of all things.

Social Gaming Network, a major distributor of games on Facebook and other social networks, has added Bezos Expeditions, Jeff Bezos’ investment vehicle, to its investor roles. The news comes just two months after the Palo Alto-based SGN announced its big, $15 million first round from investors Greylock Partners, the Founders Fund, Columbia Partners, and Novak Biddle Venture Partners. Terms of this investment were not disclosed. Bezos Expeditions also recently invested in Kongregate, a game community and distribution platform with plans to do more on Facebook. More prominently, the firm recently invested in Twitter. SGN is a little vague on what it plans to do with the funding, though it could hoover up some smaller players in the space. In April it acquired small developer Esgut.

Following the latest skirmish, Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) CEO Jerry Yang has sent out his latest talking points to Yahoo management. The gist: Yahoo faces rough waters from now until the August 1 showdown, but the company can’t be distracted. It’s time to keep your head down and focus on business, while the board worries about Icahn and Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT). In a longer letter sent to all Yahoos, not just management, Yang predicts more contentious attacks in the coming days. Other than that, the message is basically the same: head down, keep rowing! Yang reiterates that the latest plan would involve the replacement of the entire board and top management, even though Icahn said this morning, that the plan could involve some compromise on that front.

Meanwhile, Microsoft has released a statement challenging Yahoo on the accuracy of its recent announcements. Key points:

The offer sent on Friday was sent at the behest of Chairman Roy Bostock. Here’s the language: “Specifically, on Thursday afternoon, July 10, Mr. Bostock called Steve Ballmer’s office to arrange a call. On that subsequent call, Mr. Bostock told Mr. Ballmer that “with substantial guarantees on the table and an increase in the TAC (traffic acquisition cost) rate, there are the pillars of a search only deal to be done.” Mr. Bostock encouraged Mr. Ballmer to submit a new proposal to Yahoo! for a search-only deal reflecting these terms.” This is big, since it means Yahoo could be open to partial deal if the prices and guarantees were right.

It also denies that it set some type of ultimatum. Microsoft claims it wasn’t looking for a yes or no answer, but a confirmation that the new offer was good enough to warrant negotiations on a term sheet.

Amidst all the hoopla of today’s iPhone launch, Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) has made an interesting filing with the SEC, which explains that business model behind the iPhone is changing.

Here’s the key paragraph, which indicates that the new 3G iPhone is no longer a subscription business for the company: “Apple has signed multi-year agreements with carriers authorizing them to distribute and provide network services for iPhones in over 70 countries.

These agreements are generally not exclusive with a specific carrier, except in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, Ireland, and certain other countries.

Under the vast majority of these agreements, Apple will not receive follow-on revenue generating payments from carriers for the new iPhone 3G beyond the purchase of the device by carriers or a commission on sales of the device by Apple. Apple will continue to receive payments from cellular network providers related to first-generation iPhones as long as they remain active on authorized networks.”

JetBlue’s LiveTV unit, which offers in-flight TV and messaging services, is buying Verizon’s (NYSE: VZ) Airfone, an air-to-ground telecom network, in a deal WSJ (via Reuters) says is to boost its on-board internet and email offering. No purchase price was given. JetBlue took control of LiveTV in 2002 and it now shows DirecTV (NYSE: DTV), Bell ExpressVu, Foxtel and Austar channels on around seven airlines.

There’s also BlackBerry messaging and Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) Mail but, despite the launch on on-board WiFi in December, JetBlue still advises: “In order to maintain optimal bandwidth performance, attachments and internet browsing should be avoided.” Verizon had wanted to offload Airfone for some time, and the continuation of the unit had hinged on finding a buyer.

Monster is closing down its career assessment and social networking site Tickle, which it bought in 2004 for a price of up to $70 million. Tickle, of those annoying banner ads asking you to take those tests, also owned Ringo, a photo and video-sharing site (started, interestingly, by Bebo founder Michael Birch, who sold it to Tickle in 2003) , and LoveHappens, an online dating site. All of these will be absorbed into Affinity Labs, a network of vertical career sites recently acquired by Monster, according to this April story. It will also lay off about 30-35 of the employees by end of this month. Meanwhile, Monster sent out an e-mail today to that effect, announcing the closure of Tickle, reports SAI.

Good news for anyone in need of a quick internet fix: Starbucks is turning on free Wi-Fi today, courtesy of its partner AT&T (NYSE: T). The deal, according to USA Today: Users will get two hours of free internet usage when they purchase a $5 reloadable Starbucks Card and register for the Starbucks Rewards Card program. Starbucks’ relationship with AT&T was first announced in February, and the two sides of slowly rolled out the program since then, with AT&T users getting first crack at it in April.

Two hours isn’t enough time to make Starbucks your office for the afternoon, but it’ll be helpful for those times when you just have to get a blog post up right then. And if you need more time online, then you can spend some of that two hours searching for free Wi-Fi hotspots in your area.
